A guide to domestic floor soundproofing

Option 1:
Mats laid directly over floorboards/flooring

Ideally suited when floors can neither be lifted, have no existing cavity or when only a smaller sound reduction is required.

  • 12 or 15mm impact mat will be laid directly over the required floor area. 

  • Gripper risers to be added to the perimeter of the area if carpets are to be fitted. 

  • Tecsound membrane can be added to the floor prior to fitting the mats to provide additional mass.

 

This is now ready for either wood or carpet floor covering.

 

Additional plywood maybe needed to accommodate certain wood floor finishes

Option 2:
Mineral wool in cavity with impact mat overlay

This system is best suited where a timber joist and floor cavity are present.

  • Installation would include for lifting sections of the existing floorboards to expose the cavity. 

  • 60 kg mineral wool would be inserted inside the void before refitting the floorboards.

  • Any larger gaps to be sealed with acoustic sealant or even more mass is required then a tech sound membrane to be added over the entirety of the floor.

  • 12 or 15 mm impact mat laid directly over the required floor area. 

  • Gripper risers to be added to the perimeter of the area if carpets are to be fitted.

 

This is now ready for either wood or carpet floor covering.

The best performing domestic soundproofing system. An independent timber or acoustic metal stud frame will be erected with an air gap to ensure minimal contact with the party wall.

  • ​Construct timber frame with isolation strip to perimeter edges.

  • Seal frame with acoustic sealant.

  • Fill timber frame with 75mm 60kg acoustic mineral wool.

  • Mechanically fix clip and furring channel system across wall at 600mm centers.

  • Fix first layer of 15mm SoundBloc plasterboard to furring channels ensuring 5mm gap around edges.

  • Seal gaps with acoustic sealant.

  • Adhere Tecsound membrane over entire surface.

  • Fix second layer of 15mm SoundBloc plasterboard.

  • Plaster finish.

Floors would require an insulation inserted inside the cavity and a 15mm soundmat over the entirety of the space.

(Approx 14cm loss of space)

These 3 systems are generally considered the most popular in domestic settings but can be altered to suit different challenges and needs
